GOVERNMENT troops have arrested a bomb-maker and a supply officer of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in San Juan town in Batangas, the military reported.

The Army’s 2nd Infantry Division (ID) named the arrested insurgents as Ernesto Baez Jr alias Mcdo, and an alias “Asto,” both of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee (STRPC).

Lt. Col. Hector Estolas, spokesman of the 2nd ID spokesman, said Baez is the bomb-maker while Asto is the supply officer of the Sangay sa Partido sa Platoon (SPP) Kawing and Sinag 1, both under the STRPC.

He said the two were arrested on Thursday last week by joint forces from the 85th Infantry Battalion, 201st Brigade, and Batangas policemen during a law enforcement operation in Barangay Buhay na Sapa.

Estolas said the two were nabbed by virtue of arrest warrants. The PNP said the arrest warrants were for murder, and illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives.

Seized from the possession of Baez and Asto were two caliber 45 pistols, two hand grenades, an improvised grenade, and a blasting cap.

Capulong said 2nd ID commander Maj. Gen. Roberto Capulong believes the arrest prevented the communists from using the war materiel in sowing terror in the communities.

“He (Capulong) added that 2nd ID will continue to work with its security sector partners to ensure our fellowmen’s safety, especially this election season,” said Estolas.
