A BOMB maker of the New People’s Army was killed and four other rebels surrendered in separate incidents in Surigao del Norte and Ilocos Norte, the military reported yesterday.
The slain rebel was identified as one alias Wolf, a member of the NPA’s Guerilla Front 16 and described by the military as an “ordnance expert” who is in charge of the manufacture of improvised bombs for the NPA unit.
Troops from the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion were conducting security operation in Barangay Alipao in Alegria town, Surigao del Norte on Tuesday morning when they clashed with a group of insurgents.
The military said the troops conducted the operation after receiving information from residents about the rebel extortion and harassment in their community.
After a one-hour firefight, troops recovered at the scene the body of Wolf, an M16 rifle, an AK47 rifle, an AR15 rifle, a rifle grenade, an anti-personnel mine, a radio, and bomb components, among others.
Meanwhile, the Army’s 24th Infantry Battalion and Ilocos Norte provincial police facilitated the surrender of four female NPA rebels to the police stations of Marcos and Carasi in the province on Monday.
The Army’s 7th Infantry Division identified the four only through their aliases as Ligaya, Teresa, Elvie and Marinel. The brought with them an M14 rifle, a US Remington rifle, and a homemade shotgun.
