THE Institute for Occupational Health and Safety Development (IOHSAD) yesterday condemned the death of two elevator installers in Makati City last Friday, saying such tragedies should already end.
In a statement, IOHSAD Executive Director Nadia de Leon said it is never acceptable to have workers dying while doing their jobs.
“Workplace deaths should stop. No worker should die at work,” said De Leon, stressing: “Enough is enough. Workers’ lives matter.”
The IOHSAD issued the statement days after two elevator installers died, while two others were left injured, after the elevator they were fixing collapsed in a building in Makati City.
Prior to this, IOHSAD noted how three workers also died when the second floor of a building in Meycauyan, Bulacan collapsed last May 31, followed by the death of a
contractual worker while cleaning a pulverizing machine in Mandaue City in Cebu.
The IOHSAD blamed the government over its lack of actions against workplace accidents as well as the strict implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Law.
