NO Filipino was reported hurt in a Fourth of July parade shooting in a suburb in Highland Park, Chicago, which left six people dead and more than 30 others wounded, Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez said yesterday.
“So far, wala kaming natanggap na confirmation na may Pilipinong nasugatan (We have yet to receive confirmation if a Filipino is wounded in the incident),” Romualdez said in an interview with radio dzBB.
He said Consul General Susana Paez immediately contacted local authorities after the incident to inquire if there are Filipinos among the casualties.
There are almost 300,000 Filipinos residing in Illinois, of which Chicago is the most populous city.
In a related development, Romualdez reminded Filipinos to remain vigilant at all times, considering the number of hate crimes targeting Asians and other minorities in the United States since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago.
