No overseas training for Red Lions

THE “new normal” makes it unlikely for San Beda University to hold its annual overseas training that usually takes place in the United States, for now.

Lions coach Boyet Fernandez admitted that despite the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases giving the nod for collegiate league teams to resume training last Monday, pending the proper health and safety guidelines to be crafted by the Commission on Higher Education, the perils posed by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic should not be taken lightly.

“It depends on the situation. Right now, we are praying that our country will survive this pandemic,” Fernandez told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday.

“We all look forward to the new normal,” he added.

San Beda team manager Jude Roque agreed, saying: “We usually do our overseas training about a month before the tournament. Right now, we are just hoping to do some small group workouts. Perhaps gradually, depending on the developments in the fight against the virus, we can elevate our training level later on.

“So right now, overseas training is not yet advisable.”

Fernandez said his charges are willing to wait before they could go back to the gym and begin their preparations for the 96th NCAA basketball tournament set to start next year.

“I do welcome that decision, the San Beda Red Lions are waiting patiently for the resumption of training,” offered Fernandez, a registered nurse and former 11-year pro league veteran and champion coach with Sta. Lucia. He also has four NCAA titles and six PBA D-League crowns.
