THE Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program, commonly known as the “number coding” scheme, will be lifted on August 23 for the Ninoy Aquino Day commemoration, a special non-working holiday, and on August 26 for the celebration of the National Heroes Day, a regular holiday, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

President Marcos Jr. had earlier moved the commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21 to 23 for a longer weekend and to promote domestic tourism.

Under the number coding scheme, vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2 are prohibited on roads every Monday, 3 and 4 on Tuesday, 5 and 6 on Wednesday, 7 and 8 on Thursday, 9 and 0 on Friday during the coding hours.

Earlier, MMDA chief Romando Artes said every time the agency suspends number coding, 20 percent more vehicles use the roadways, which translates to around 800 more vehicles on EDSA and 400 more on C5, two of the metropolis’ prime thoroughfares.
