THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday said vehicles returning from the provinces did not pose a major traffic problem in the metropolis, particularly along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), as Filipinos returned to work after the holidays.
MMDA spokesperson Melissa Carunungan said the agency’s Metrobase did not monitor any major traffic build up yesterday.
“According to the Metrobase of the MMDA, the traffic was generally light, with the exception of isolated cases such as road crashes, which the MMDA cleared as swiftly and safely as possible,” Carunungan said.
She said the same thing also happened last Tuesday, a holiday.
“After the morning rush yesterday, lumuwag ang traffic from lunch onwards. The vehicles coming from the provinces to Metro Manila did not cause substantial traffic,” Carunungan said.
Last week, MMDA Deputy Chair Frisco San Juan Jr. said the agency is bracing for the expected heavy traffic in the metropolis as residents return following the Christmas holiday and the long New Year weekend.
The agency previously said traffic volume along the 23.8-km long EDSA, the metropolis’ prime thoroughfare, has surpassed its pre-pandemic level of 405,000 vehicles daily, with more than 430,000 using the thoroughfare during the holidays.
