OFFICIALS of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) yesterday urged the public to head to other hospitals, saying its Emergency Room (ER) is three times over capacity.

In a statement, NKTI Executive Director Dr. Rose Rosete-Liquete said the hospital is currently overwhelmed with patients, most of whom are undergoing dialysis.

“Patients have overwhelmed the ER of NKTI. Many of them are in need of dialysis, including patients with leptospirosis or COVID-19,” said Liquete.

“Because of this, our ER has presently reached three times over our capacity,” she added.

In a separate statement, the DOH said it is already providing the necessary assistance to the NKTI in attending to patient needs.

“Rest assured that the DOH is on top of this, and will make sure that all patients seeking care will be accommodated,” said the DOH.

The NKTI chief said the lack of vacancy in their ward beds have contributed to the overwhelmed ER.

Liquete also said the hospital is also experiencing shortage in nurses who will attend to patients.

“We advise the public to head to the nearest hospital so that immediate medical attention can be provided to them,” said Liquete, adding the public may also call the National Patient Navigation and Referral Center for proper hospital referral.

“It is the agency of the Department of Health (DOH) that can help you find a hospital you may go to,” said Liquete.
