New infections up to 34,021, highest in PH

NEW coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the country spiked to 34,021 yesterday, surpassing the previous high of 33,169 set last January 10, with no signs of slowing down.

In its latest bulletin, the Department of Health said the total number of infections in the country rose to 3,092,409 while the death toll climbed to 52,736, counting the 82 additional deaths reported yesterday, for a case fatality rate of 1.71 percent.

The current positivity rate in the Philippines stood at 47.9 percent among the 78,866 tested samples on January 11.

Active cases jumped to 237,387 from 208,164 last Wednesday, with over 225,000 mild cases and more than 7,300 asymptomatic cases.

The health department also reported 4,694 additional recoveries to bring the total of survivors to 2,802,286.

At least 133 personnel at the Philippine Coast Guard headquarters in Manila recently tested positive for the deadly virus, prompting the temporary lockdown of several offices.

“As we speak, 133 PCG personnel have tested for COVID-19 at the national headquarters,” PCG information officer Joy Gumatay said, adding: “All the concerned personnel are on quarantine and currently recuperating.”

Locked down were the Coast Guard Internal Audit, Provost Marshal, Office of the Command Master Chief Petty Officer, Coast Guard Legal Service, Commission on Audit, Office of the Deputy Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Comptrollership, and Coast Guard Public Affairs.

The PNP said the number of areas under granular lockdown throughout the country rose to 206 as of Wednesday, from 170 last Tuesday.

Police said 103 of the areas under granular lockdown are in the National Capital Region, 57 in Cagayan Valley, 32 in Calabarzon, eight in Ilocos region, five in Mimaropa, and one in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Police said the areas under granular lockdowns are in 123 barangays within 12 cities and towns and are manned by 291 policemen and 326 force multipliers.

A total of 356 households, composed of 866 individuals, are affected, according to the PNP. — With victor reyes
