New infections drop below 30K

FROM a high of 32,744 in the past three days, new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the country dipped slightly to 29,828 yesterday while 67 more succumbed to the deadly virus, according to the Department of Health.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said total infections in the country rose to 3,417,216 counting the 30,552 last Saturday, 32,744 last Friday, and 31,173 last Thursday, while the death toll climbed to 53,472 for a case fatality rate of 1.56 percent.

The current positivity rate in the Philippines stood at 41.8 percent among the 69,014 tested samples on January 21.

There were 273,580 active cases, with over 260,000 mild cases and more than 8,300 asymptomatic cases.

The DOH also reported 36,763 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 3,090,164.

The PNP said 204 more of its personnel have contracted the deadly virus, raising the number of active cases in the police force to 3,151, counting the 310 reported last Saturday.

The PNP also reported 331 new recoveries, pushing the number of survivors to 43,917, against 126 deaths. In all, total cases in the PNP have reached 47,194 since March 2020.

Among those recently infected by COVID-19 in the police force was PNP chief Dionardo Carlos, who tested positive for the virus last January 2. He has recovered has resumed face-to-face engagements. — With Victor Reyes
