New cases up to 10K; 109 more die

AFTER two straight days of less than 10K infections, 10,019 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health yesterday while 109 more succumbed to the deadly virus.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said it will report “additional deaths tomorrow in a separate advisory, to reflect numbers not included in the previous case bulletins due (to) technical issues encountered with (the) COVIDKaya” monitoring system.

Overall, infections in the country rose to 2,632,881, counting the 9,868 cases reported last Wednesday and 9,055 last Tuesday, while the toll climbed to 38,937 for a case fatality rate of 1.48.

The positivity rate was 18.1 percent out of the 56,418 tests conducted last October 5.

There were 115,328 active cases, with 77.1 percent mild cases, 13.6 percent asymptomatic cases, 5.3 percent moderate cases, 2.7 percent severe cases, and 1.2 percent critical cases.

The DOH also reported 7,425 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 2,478,616.

Two more policemen died of COVID-19, bringing the PNP death toll from the virus to 121.

One of the fatalities was an executive master sergeant assigned in one of the police stations in Metro Manila, information from the PNP Health Service showed. The cop died at the National Kidney Transplant Institute last October 5, seven days after he tested positive for the disease.

He was earlier diagnosed with chronic kidney disease stage 5 associated with hyperkalemia and hypertension.

The second fatality was a corporal assigned with a municipal police station in Calabarzon who died last October 6 at the Philippine General Hospital. The cop, who has an acute myeloid leukemia, tested positive last September 24. — With Victor Reyes
