New cases drop below 1K anew

FOR the second time in three days, less than 1,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health but deaths continued to surge to the grim mark of 48,000.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said total infections in the country rose to 2,828,660 counting the 890 yesterday. Last Monday, the DOH reported 984 cases while 1,153 cases were reported Tuesday.

The death toll from the deadly virus climbed to 47,682 for a case fatality rate of 1.69. The positivity rate in the country stood at 2.5 percent out of the 32,254 tests conducted last November 22. Active cases continued their downward trend, with 17,864 reported yesterday, down from 18,721 last Tuesday, with 53.4 percent mild cases, 21.3 percent moderate cases, 14.4 percent severe cases, 6 percent critical cases, and 4.8 percent asymptomatic cases. Active cases account for 0.6 percent of COVID cases in the country.

The DOH also reported 1,710 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 2,763,114. This means that 97.7 percent of COVID patients in the country have recovered. The DOH is consulting the World Health Organization (WHO) if the downtrend in COVID- 19 cases in the Philippines would warrant a declaration the pandemic in the country is now under control or contained, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
