New cases down slightly to 19,271

AFTER three straight days of over 20,000 infections, new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases dipped slightly to 19,271 yesterday but 205 more succumbed to the deadly virus, raising the toll to 36,788, according to the Department of Health.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the number of infections in the country rose to 2,366,749, counting the 21,261 new cases last Thursday, 20,366 last Friday, and 23,134 last Saturday.

There were 178,196 active cases, with 92.3 percent mild cases, 3.1 percent asymptomatic cases, 2.6 percent moderate cases, 1.4 percent severe cases, and 0.6 percent critical cases.

The DOH also reported 25,037 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 2,151,765.

San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza has tested positive for the deadly virus for the second time in three months.

In a statement, the Diocese of San Carlos yesterday said that Alminaza is asymptomatic but “is required to isolate himself for the time being.”

Alminaza first tested positive for COVID-19 last June.

San Carlos Diocese Chancellor Fr. Marjun Almario advised people who had close contacts with Alminaza to monitor their health. He also called on the faithful to pray for the immediate recovery of Alminaza and other COVID-19 patients.

Last Friday night, the Archdiocese of Manila announced that Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula had tested positive for COVID-19. Advincula is currently on quarantine and is experiencing slight fever.
