FROM 16,953 last Sunday, new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases dropped to 14,546 yesterday but 112 more lost their struggle against the deadly virus, according to the Department of Health.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said total infections in the country rose to 3,560,202 while the death toll climbed past the 54K mark at 54,003 for a case fatality rate of 1.52 percent.
The current positivity rate in the Philippines stood at 28.4 percent among the 52,013 tested samples on January 29.
Active cases also dipped to190,818 from 202,864 last Sunday, with over 177,000 mild cases and more than 8,200 asymptomatic cases.
The DOH also reported 26,500 additional recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 3,315,381.
Meanwhile, Baguio City mayor and contact tracing czar Benjamin Magalong has tested positive anew for COVID-19. He first tested positive in April last year.
“My swab test result came out last night (Sunday night). I am positive for COVID-19,” Magalong said in a statement yesterday, adding he is experiencing “very mild” symptoms, unlike last year when he experienced “severe” symptoms.
As of last Sunday, Baguio City has recorded 39,944 cases with 2,488 active cases and 770 deaths.
Seven children who played with used syringes recently dumped on the shoreline of Barangay Concepcion have tested positive for COVID-19 after an antigen test.
In a radio interview, Barangay Concepcion Chairman Anthony Arcilla said the children, aged three to 11, played with the syringes reportedly dumped by Excel Care Diagnostics and Wellness Center sometime last week. — With Victor Reyes and Christian Oineza
