HOPES that new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases would continue to decline were jarred yesterday when the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,190 new infections, a day after the country saw less than 1,000 new cases for the first time in 10 months.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the total number of infections in the country climbed to 2,820,494 while 309 more lost their battle against the deadly virus, raising the death toll to 46,117 for a case fatality rate of 1.64

Last Tuesday, the DOH reported 849 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest since January 5 when 937 cases were reported.

The positivity rate in the country stood at 3.5 percent out of the 33,567 tests conducted last November 15.

Active cases further dipped to 23,846 from 25,464 last Tuesday, with 58.1 percent mild cases, 19.6 percent moderate cases, 12 percent severe cases, 5.2 percent asymptomatic cases, and 5 percent critical cases. The active cases account for 0.8 percent of COVID cases in the country.

The DOH also reported 2,759 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 2,750,531. This means that 97.5 percent of COVID patients in the country have recovered.
