THE chief of the National Bureau of Investigation-Zamboanga Sibugay accidentally shot himself to death while cleaning his gun in his house in the province last Saturday.

A report from the Zamboanga Peninsula regional police office identified the fatality as Akmat L. Sampang, 59, a resident of Purok Golden Mango, Cataluna Residence, Barangay Poblacion in Ipil town.

Police said the incident occurred at around 8 a.m.

Before the incident, police said Sampang asked his unnamed live-in partner to buy buko juice. Sampang was reported cleaning his firearm at that time.

“Upon returning home, she (Sampang’s live-in partner) was surprised when the victim was already lying with blood with a gunshot wound on his chest while his issued firearm was beside him,” the report said.

She sought help from a neighbor and hired a tricycle to bring Sampang to the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Alrasid Sauti.

Investigators recovered at the scene a Glock 40 pistol, a fired cartridge case, a deformed fired bullet, and a magazine with 13 bullets.

The regional police called the incident an “accidental firing that resulted in the untimely death of the victim.”
