Vote buying last May? 62% of Pinoys say no

MAJORITY of Filipinos or 62 percent said they neither experienced nor knew of any cases of vote-buying incidents during the May midterm elections, the July 12 to 17 Tugon ng Masa survey of the OCTA Research showed.

The survey, which involved 1,200 adult respondents nationwide with a margin of error of ±3 percent, also showed that 38 percent said they either experienced or knew of such cases.

Except in Mindanao, the majority of Filipinos across geographical locations said they have not experienced vote buying, with highest in the National Capital Region at 63 percent, followed by the rest of Luzon at 76 percent, the Visayas at 55 percent and Mindanao at 38 percent.

Majority of Mindanaoans or 62 percent said they experienced or knew of vote buying, followed by the Visayas at 45 percent, NCR at 37 percent and Luzon at 24 percent.

Among socioeconomic classes, the majority of Class ABC said they knew of vote-buying cases, followed by Class D and E at 37 percent each. Majority of Classes D and E or 63 percent each said they are not aware, nor did they experience vote buying, followed by Class ABC at a near majority of 49 percent.

OCTA also found that the majority of those who claimed to know about vote buying or 71 percent believed that it influenced the outcome of the polls. The highest belief was from NCR at 86 percent, followed by the Visayas at 81 percent, Visayas at 66 percent and Mindanao at 61 percent.

Majority across socioeconomic classes also believe that vote buying influenced the results of the polls with 84 percent among ABC, 70 percent among class D and 61 percent among class E.
