PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has named Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas Dante Vargas as the acting Ombudsman, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said yesterday.
Castro, in a message to the media, confirmed Vargas’ appointment a day before the Judicial and Bar Council’s scheduled screening of candidates for the position of Ombudsman.
Vargas was appointed as Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas by former president Rodrigo Duterte in 2022.
As deputy ombudsman for the Visayas, he oversaw the investigations and case monitoring in the region.
Vargas replaced retired Court of Appeals presiding justice Mariflor Punzalan-Castillo, who was initially named acting Ombudsman last July 28, vice Samuel Martires, who retired last July 27.
