DESPITE his appointment as the next archbishop of Cebu, Bishop Alberto Uy has vowed to continue serving the Diocese of Tagbilaran as long as possible.
Speaking at the Tagbilaran Cathedral in Bohol last Sunday, Uy said he remains committed to serving his flock until the time comes when he will have to transfer to the Archdiocese of Cebu.
“For now, I remain here, serving you in the Diocese of Tagbilaran,” said Uy as quoted by CBCP News, the official news agency of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
He also promised to always come home to his birthplace despite being assigned in Cebu.
“We will still see each other again,” Uy said.
Pope Leo XIV appointed Uy as the next archbishop of Cebu after the retirement of Archbishop Jose Palma was approved.
In a social media post, the Archdiocese of Cebu said Uy is set to be canonically installed as its fifth prelate on September 30.
“With hearts full of joy, we announce to you all that, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, His Excellency, Most Reverend Alberto Sy Uy will be canonically installed as the 25th Bishop and the 5th Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cebu,” said the Cebu archdiocese.
It called on all the Cebuano faithful to join in welcoming their new shepherd.
“Let us unite in prayer and thanksgiving as we welcome our new shepherd on this special day, and celebrate this historic moment for our local Church,” said the archdiocese.
Further details about the installation rites remain unavailable.
Before Uy, the Archdiocese of Cebu was served by Archbishops Gabriel Reyes, Julio Cardinal Rosales, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, and Palma.
