THE Philippine Embassy yesterday warned against the spread of false information on social media that the United States is enforcing restrictions on dual citizens and green card holders.

In an advisory, the embassy said there is no truth to the claim, adding the US government has made no policy changes regarding dual citizens and green card holders.

“The US government has made no policy changes regarding dual citizenship or lawful permanent resident travel rights. We urge the Filipino community to verify information through official government sources, avoid sharing unverified content, and report false information to the platform where it is published,” the embassy said.

The embassy appealed to Filipinos not to make any decisions on their citizenship based on what they read on social media.

“Please do not make legal decisions, such as renouncing your Philippine citizenship, based on social media content. Renunciation of Philippine citizenship is a serious, irreversible legal action. For questions, please contact the Philippine Embassy or your nearest Philippine consulate,” it added.

Under Republic Act No. 9225 or the Dual Citizenship Law, natural-born Filipino citizens who became naturalized citizens of another country can reacquire Philippine citizenship if they are at least 18 years old.

There are at least 4.6 million Filipinos and Filipino-Americans living and working in the US.
