“WE stood up to the bully, and the bully ran away.”

Thus said PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III yesterday during a press briefing at Camp Crame as he put to a close his spat with acting Davao City mayor Sebastian Duterte.

He made the statement a day after he was declared the default winner in his anticipated boxing match with Duterte, who was a no-show during Sunday’s fight at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

“I’ve been bullied personally so many times by that guy. When I was the regional director of Davao, he said he is going to slap me in the face,” said Torre, referring to an incident when he tried to implement the three-minute emergency response program in the Davao region.

During the flag-raising on Monday morning also at Camp Crame, Torre told policemen that as the PNP chief, he is not going to allow himself to be bullied by people, regardless of the stature.

“Especially the name calling, I am not going to allow that. Being called a monkey, I am not going to allow that… We’re not going to allow ourselves to be disrespected just like that,” he said.

“So as of now, let us put a closure to this chapter… We stood up to the bully and the bully ran away. With that, I close that chapter, I close that episode,” he said.

Duterte had earlier challenged Torre to a fight, which the PNP chief accepted provided that the fight be made a charity event.

Torre said the proceeds of the fight will go to the victims of the recent typhoons and flooding victims.

Updating the media on the proceeds of last Sunday’s event that involved several undercard fights, Torre said they generated P16 million in donation and P440,000 in ticket sales.

He also said some P5 million worth of canned goods were donated.

Torre again thanked those who played a role in the fund-raising activity for the victims of tropical cyclones “Crising,” “Dante,” “Emong,” and the southwest monsoon.
