Tandang Sora bill passed on final reading

QUEZON City Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas yesterday thanked  the leadership of the House and the Senate for finally recognizing officially the heroism of Melchora Aquino, more popularly known as “Tandang (Old) Sora,” by passing his bill declaring January 6 of every year a special working holiday in Quezon City in commemoration of her birth anniversary.

“This is a momentous occasion that will remind us of the martyrdom and sacrifices of Tandang Sora, who is a key figure in the liberation of our country. As a Novaleño, I could not be any prouder that her heroism took place in my beloved district in Novaliches,” Vargas said. “May Tandang Sora’s courage and motherly love live on.”

The House of Representatives approved the bill on third and final reading in 2022 while the Senate approved it on December 17, 2024.

Aquino, known as the “Mother of the Philippine Revolution,” Melchora Aquino was in her 80s when she joined the revolt against Spain.

Vargas reminded the public Novaliches in Quezon City serves as home of the “Katipunan Tree” or the duhat (java plum) tree where Tandang Sora helped wounded Katipuneros, including Apolinario Mabini.
