THE Justice Department has created a special investigation team to probe the killing last week of former Kalibo, Aklan mayor and veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang.

The order made public yesterday said two state prosecutors will lead the Special Investigation Team on New Cases (SITN).

“The SITN will be tasked to coordinate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation of media-related killings. The SITN is directed to submit regular progress reports to the DOJ until the case is fully resolved,” the order signed by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.

It said that the Presidential Task Force on Violence against Media Workers (PTFoMS) led by Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr. has been informed of the creation of the team.

The SITN will also coordinate its probe with the PTFoMS and other law enforcement agencies investigating Dayang’s killing.

The 89-year-old Dayang, the long-term publisher of the Philippines Graphic Magazine and chair emeritus of the Philippine Publishers Association Inc., was shot dead at his residence in Kalibo on the night of April 29.
