Signal No. 3 up in 2 areas due to severe tropical storm ‘Opong’

THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday afternoon raised wind Signal No. 3 in two areas due to severe tropical storm “Opong.”

In its 2 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA placed the northern and eastern portions of Northern Samar, and the northern portion of Eastern Samar under Signal No. 3.

Fourteen areas are under Signal No. 2. These are southern portion of Quezon, eastern portion of Marinduque, northeastern portion of Romblon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, rest of Northern Samar, central portion of Eastern Samar, northern and central portions of Samar, Biliran, and northern portion of Leyte.

Meanwhile, the following areas are under Signal No. 1.

  • Southwestern portion of Mountain Province

  • Southern portion of Ilocos Sur

Opong was some 300 kms east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of 1 p.m. It is moving westward at 15 kph.

“On the forecast track, it may pass close to or make landfall over Northern Samar tomorrow early morning, then Bicol Region by tomorrow morning or early afternoon,” said PAGASA.

“Opong may reach typhoon category before making landfall over Bicol region,” it added.
