A Senate blue ribbon subcommittee will conduct a motu proprio (on its own) investigation into the collapse of the multi-billion-peso Cabagan-Sta. Maria Bridge in Isabela today, Friday.
Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano will preside over the probe after he was assigned by his sister, Senate Blue Ribbon chairperson Pia Cayetano.
Cayetano earlier filed Resolution 1322 urging the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate the collapse of the bridge in Isabela and scrutinize the processes of the Department of Public Works and Highways in the construction of public infrastructure projects in the country.
He cited the numerous observations of the Commission on Audit on DPWH for technical defects and deficiencies in its infrastructure projects due to inadequate supervision and monitoring by the department.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has also filed a separate resolution urging the Senate to probe the collapse.
The February 27 incident, which saw a portion of the bridge connecting the municipalities of Cabagan to Sta. Maria in Isabela collapsed, leaving six people injured.
The DPWH said the structure could only accommodate up to 44 metric tons, while the truck that passed through the bridge was carrying equipment up to 100 metric tons.
