THE Supreme Court yesterday directed the Senate and the House of Representatives to answer the petition filed by 1Sambayan, Kapatiran party, and several other groups against political dynasties.

The Senate and the House were given a “non-extendible period of 10 days from receipt of notice” to answer the petition asking the SC to compel Congress to enact an anti-political dynasty law.

During the en banc session yesterday, the SC also ordered the consolidation of the petitions of 1Sambayan, Kapatiran party, Sanlakas, members of Advocates for National Interest, and Wilfredo Trinidad dealing with the same issue.

Article II Section 26 of the 1987 Constitution provides that “the state shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.”

Despite the constitutional provision, Congress has yet to come up with legislation prohibiting political dynasties.
