AFTER spending more than two years in jail and, subsequently, on death row, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) convicted of possession of illegal drugs in Saudi Arabia was repatriated from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) late on Tuesday night.

The OFW was arrested on April 2, 2023 on drug-related charges and was detained at the Riyadh General Jail. He was convicted on September 24, 2024 for possession of illegal drugs.

“The OFW was granted freedom following sustained diplomatic and legal efforts of the DMW,” the department said.

“The department provided the OFW with legal representation and financial assistance to ensure due process and facilitate his safe return home,” said the DMW.

After his return home, he visited the DMW central office on Wednesday.

The OFW is temporarily housed at a hotel in Pasay City while awaiting his flight to Butuan City.

“He was personally assured by Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac of all the necessary assistance and support,” said the DMW.
