Sara says impeach bid vs Marcs won’t fly

VICE President Sara Duterte yesterday said any attempt to impeach President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will not prosper because the House of Representatives is dominated by the chief executives’ allies led by his cousin, Speaker Martin Romualdez.

“Well, we don’t expect that the House of Representatives will take it seriously because most of the members of the House of Representatives are allies of the President,” Duterte told reporters on Saturday night in Digos City.

She was interviewed during the miting de avance of the “Duter10,” the senatorial candidates of the PDP-Laban, which is led by reelectionist Senators Christopher “Bong” Go and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

The Vice President is also campaigning for reelectionist Sen. Imee Marcos, the President’s elder sister who has been dropped from the administration’s senatorial slate “Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas” and Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar, who remains a member of the administration’s ticket despite having drawn heavy flak for accepting Duterte’s endorsement.

“And an impeachment is a political exercise. It’s a game of numbers. So, I don’t expect anything to happen to that impeachment complaint,” Duterte said.

The Vice President refused to comment on the merits of the complaint, saying that she has yet to read it. “Hindi ako maka-comment kasi hindi ko alam na may nangyaring ganoon (I can’t comment because I didn’t know that something like that happened),” she said.

“After the fact na lang ng filing nalaman ko na mayroong impeachment sa kaniya (I only learned about the impeachment complaint only after the fact),” she added.

The Office of the House Secretary General last Thursday rejected Duterte Youth’s impeachment complaint because Secretary General Reginald Velasco was not available to personally receive it.

The complaint cited Marcos’ alleged hand in allowing the International Criminal Court (ICC) to arrest former president Rodrigo Duterte last March 11 and detain him in the Netherlands where he is facing trial for crimes against humanity.

It accuses Marcos of betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution.

Duterte Youth is currently represented by Rep. Drixie Mae Cardema.
