JUDY Araneta-Roxas, matriarch of one of the country’s most prominent families and stalwart of the Liberal Party, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91.
In a Facebook post, former interior secretary Mar Roxas said his mother Judy, widow of the late senator Gerry Roxas, “passed away peacefully this (Tuesday) morning surrounded by family and loved ones.”
“Please include her in your prayers,” he said, adding that details of the wake will be announced later.
Roxas, who was also a former senator, did not provide any detail as to the cause of his mother’s death.
Sen. Francis Pangilinan extended his condolences to the Roxas for the passing of “Tita Judy.”
“My family and I offer our deepest condolences to the former secretary Mar Roxas and the entire Roxas and Araneta families on the passing of Ms. Judy Araneta-Roxas, a steadfast pillar of strength and grace,” Pangilinan said in a statement.
He said Judy was a “mother to generations of Liberal Party members” whose “quiet courage and generosity” served as a beacon in difficult times, “reminding us that politics is not about power, but about service.”
He also said it was Judy who opened the “balay (house),” the family’s property in Cubao, Quezon City, to LP members and supporters to give them “a place in the heart of the metropolis.”
