THE Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines 1 and 2 and the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT3) will offer free rides to the public from April 30 to May 3 as a tribute to all workers on Labor Day, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said yesterday.

“Nais kong sabihin sa lahat ng ating mga commuter ay iniutos ko na para magbigay ng ating kaunting parangal sa ating mga manggagawa… kasama sa Labor Day Celebration ay maging libre ang sakay sa MRT 3, LRT 1 and 2 (I would like to say to all commuters, that I have ordered a recognition of all workers … as part of the Labor Day Celebration, the ride in MRT 3, LRT 1 and 2 will be free),” the President said in a video message.

“Ito ay bilang kaunting pagkilala sa sakripisyo at ang kontribusyon ng ating mga manggagawa hindi lamang sa ating ekonomiya kundi sa ating lipunan. Happy Labor Day! (This is to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of our workers not just to the economy but the whole country. Happy Labor Day!),” he added.

The Department of Transportation and rail operators are expected to implement the directive and ensure smooth and safe rides for workers during the four days.

Around 1.1 million commuters ride the elevated train system or around 460,000 passengers in LRT 1, 200,000 in LRT2 and 450,000 in MRT 3.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said this year’s Labor Day celebrations highlight the government’s ongoing commitment to improve the lives of Filipino workers through support programs, wage reforms, and inclusive economic growth.

The country will mark the 123rd Labor Day Anniversary on May 1, with the theme “Manggagawang Pilipino, Kaagapay Sa Pag-Unlad, Sandigan Ng Mas Matatag Na Bagong Pilipinas!”

The Department of Labor and Employment will spearhead the celebration, which will include various activities, including a job fair that will be participated in by at least 103 local employers and companies and offer around 14,207 jobs.

DOLE would also distribute cash aid under its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged/Displaced (TUPAD) during the Labor Day celebration and bestow the “The Outstanding Workers of the Republic (TOWER) awards for outstanding non-supervisory and white-collar workers.
