Manila police have arrested 17 individuals accused of burning a trailer truck and hurling stones during demonstrations on Sunday.

“Seventeen individuals believed to be responsible are now in the custody of the Manila Police District,” the Philippine National Police (PNP) said in a statement.

It said firefighters and police personnel immediately responded “and the situation is now contained.”

“Appropriate charges are being readied for filing against those involved,” the PNP said.

“We respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly, but we strongly appeal to everyone to remain calm and refrain from violence. Such actions endanger lives and undermine the message of those who wish to protest peacefully,” it added.

PNP said it remains committed to safeguarding the public and the demonstrators.

“We will continue to exercise maximum tolerance, but we will also act against anyone who causes harm or damages property. Rest assured, those responsible for these acts will be held accountable under the law,” it added.
