POPE Leo XIV has appointed Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy as the new archbishop of Cebu while accepting the resignation of Archbishop Jose Palma, who led the archdiocese for the past 14 years.

In a report by CBCP News, Uy is set to become the fifth archbishop of Cebu after becoming the second episcopal appointment in the Philippines.

Palma submitted his resignation after turning 75 years old, which is the age at which bishops are required to submit their resignations.

Born in Ubay, Bohol, Uy studied philosophy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran City and theology at St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City, where he earned a master’s degree in pastoral ministry.

Ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Talibon in 1993, the 58-year-old prelate has held several roles in the diocese.

From 2002 to 2006, Uy studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, earning a doctorate in sacred theology.

Pope Francis appointed Uy as the bishop of Tagbilaran in October 2016.
