SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero yesterday assured the public the present political unrest will not delay the passage of key economic measures amid concerns that lawmaking may take the backseat amid recent political developments in the country.
The Dutch ING Bank has expressed concern that the political noise due to the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte and the impending impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte could hog the legislative bandwidth away from policymaking.
it said that the present political unrest could cause delays in the passage of economic measures, with lawmakers becoming preoccupied with the latest political developments.
Escudero said what is currently happening in the country is part and parcel of having a “vibrant” democracy, which he said is normal “given that we are a democratic state comprised of divergent peoples who may have different views.”
“What is important is that discussion and debate are peaceful, which they have been, and people look at elections to effect any change they may want in government,” he said.
