PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil yesterday ordered intensified police operations to ensure public safety and prevent criminal activities during the Christmas season.
Marbil said the order is also meant to address political security challenges brought about by the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
“Christmas is a season of joy and giving, but it is also a period when criminal elements may exploit public vulnerability. The PNP is committed to making this season safe and secure for all Filipinos,” said Marbil.
Marbil ordered police units to intensify police visibility in areas such as malls, markets, transport hubs and other places frequented by people.
The PNP said quick response teams would also be on standby, ready to respond to any emergencies.
“The presence of uniformed personnel in public areas is a reassurance of our dedication to protecting the public. We aim to provide peace of mind during the holiday rush,” said Marbil.
The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group will also step up operations against online scams and fraud.
“Our operations target the syndicates behind these scams, but the public’s awareness and caution are crucial in preventing victimization,” said Marbil.
Marbil urged the public to be vigilant in their online transactions so they won’t fall prey to cybercriminals. He said the public should avoid clicking suspicious links.
He likewise urged the public to observe basic safety practices, such as ensuring the safety of their personal belongings, avoiding large cash transactions, and reporting “suspicious” activities.
“The holidays are a time for celebration, and the PNP is here to ensure that every Filipino can enjoy this season without fear,” said Marbil.
The PNP said it is also preparing for potential political activities, including a prayer rally announced by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in support of President Marcos Jr.’s position on the impeachment of Duterte and demonstrations by proponents of the case.
President Marcos said he is against the impeachment of Duterte. He said this would only be a waste of time, noting that it would tie down the House and the Senate.
The INC last week said it was organizing a rally to show its support to Marcos’ stand against the impeachment of Duterte.
“Our mandate is clear: to ensure public safety under any circumstances. The PNP is a professional and apolitical organization. We are here to serve and protect all Filipinos, regardless of the political climate,” said Marbil.
