THE PNP yesterday said it recorded 120 incidents during the observance of Holy Week, up by 40 percent compared to last year.

“The PNP recorded a total of 120 incidents across the country,” the PNP Public Information Office said in a statement, citing data gathered from April 13 up to yesterday morning.

The increase was attributed to the significant rise in drowning and fire incidents.

There were 64 drowning incidents this year, up from just 21 last year. The number of fire incidents increased to 15 this year, from just three last year.

The other incidents recorded during this year’s Holy Week break included 14 vehicular accidents, three acts of lasciviousness, two cases of alarm and scandal, one theft, and one robbery.

“In addition, there were 20 incidents classified under other categories,” the PIO said without elaborating.

Nevertheless, PNP said the observance of this year’s Holy Week was generally peaceful with no major untoward incident.

“This success is attributed to the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies, local government units, and the cooperation of the public, all working in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure a safe and solemn Lenten season,” the PIO said.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, during yesterday’s flag raising at Camp Crame, commended policemen for their dedication in maintaining peace and order during the Holy Week.

“While the rest of the nation was on break, you were on duty,” said Marbil.

“Because of your vigilance and presence, the entire observance of Holy Week was generally peaceful, with no major incidents recorded. That is a true testament to your commitment, professionalism, and sense of duty,” Marbil also said.

The PNP also reported a 55.56 percent increase in index crimes or focus crimes throughout the country during the Holy Week.

It said only four index crimes were recorded during the same period last year.

“This notable decline in criminal incidents is a strong indication that our law enforcement strategies, in line with the President’s call for a Bagong Pilipinas, are working,” said Marbil.

“Our personnel remained on heightened alert during the Holy Week, and we commend their dedication in ensuring the safety of our kababayans,” the PNP added.
