THE Philippines has formally committed to the Labor Inspection Convention, 1947 (No. 81) of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on Tuesday (Geneva time) in Geneva, Switzerland.

In a statement, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said that Labor Undersecretary Benedicto Ernesto Bitonio formally submitted the ratified Convention 81 to ILO Director General Gilbert Houngbo.

“With the ratification of Convention 81, the Philippine government reaffirms its commitment to strengthening its labor inspection system to ensure fair, decent, safe, and secure working conditions for all workers,” said Bitonio.

“The ILO convention ratified by the Philippines underscores the Philippines’ commitment to fair and safe working conditions for all Filipino workers,” he added.

With the Philippine commitment formally lodged, Bitonio said the DOLE is ready to implement an effective labor inspection system across all industries to monitor, enforce, and safeguard workers’ rights.

“The Philippine Government will focus on improving labor inspection services, enhancing the capacity of labor inspectors, and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to promote compliance with labor laws,” said Bitonio.

ILO Convention No. 81 establishes global standards for a comprehensive labor inspection framework to effectively enforce national laws on working conditions and protect workers’ rights.

The Philippines is the 151st ILO member-state to ratify Convention No. 81.

In a separate statement, Houngbo welcomed the addition of the Philippines among the countries that adopted ILO Convention No. 81.

“With today’s ratification, the Philippines reaffirms its commitment to enforcing legal provisions that uphold the conditions of work and the protection of workers,” said Houngbo.

“This Convention plays a pivotal role in ensuring decent work through rigorous enforcement of national laws related to working conditions,” he added.

Houngbo noted that the Philippines has now ratified 41 ILO conventions.
