THE Philippine Navy has launched a review of its protocols over recreational and operational diving involving its personnel.

The review was prompted by the death of two Navy divers during a recreational dive in Maitum town in Sarangani last Monday.

Navy spokesman Capt. John Percie Alcos said the Navy “deeply mourns” the loss of its two personnel who “tragically passed away” during the dive.

“The recreational activity was authorized as these personnel were on official leave and wellness break,” Alcos said in a statement.

Alcos said the Navy is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“As safety remains a top priority, the Philippine Navy is also reviewing and enhancing our protocols related to both recreational and operational diving activities to prevent similar incidents in the future,” said Alcos.

Alcos extended the Navy’s “heartfelt condolences” to the bereaved families of the two personnel, even as he assured them of the Navy’s “full support during this difficult time.”
