AN underwater drone with Chinese markings was recovered by fishermen off Palawan last Sunday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said yesterday.
Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG’s spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, said investigations are underway to determine the drone’s origin.
Tarriela said the 12-foot long device was found by fishermen in the waters near Barangay Barangonan in Linapacan town during routine fishing operations.
Tarriela said the drone was turned over by the fishermen to the PCG later on Monday.
“The alleged drone had been safely transported and secured at PCG Station Linapacan for further verification, technical examination, and investigation, in coordination with relevant national security agencies,” he said.
Citing preliminary observations, Tarriela said the device features a conductivity-temperature-depth sensor, which he said is designed to measure seawater salinity, temperature and depth which are vital in oceanographic profiling.
“The sensor includes Chinese labeling and a serial number (CTD-20090334), along with visible corrosion from prolonged saltwater exposure,” said Tarriela.
“It is mounted on a rugged metal frame, typical of components in autonomous underwater vehicles commonly known as ‘underwater drones’,” he added.
Fishermen have recovered similar underwater drones in various parts of the country in the past years.
PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan said the PCG remains vigilant in “safeguarding our maritime domain and protecting the livelihoods of our fisherfolk.”
