A Manila-bound passenger was arrested at the Tacloban City Airport last Saturday for possession of a replica of an MP5 rifle, a violation of the election gun ban.

In a statement, the PNP Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP) reminded the public that the election gun ban is still in effect, adding the ban also covers gun replicas.

The agency said a routine screening showed the male passenger’s baggage contained a replica of a Heckler & Koch MP5 rifle, complete with a magazine.

The passenger was barred from boarding his flight and arrested.

The Commission on Elections has included gun replicas, airsoft and air guns in the list of those covered by the election gun ban, which is being implemented from January 12 to June 11.

AVSEGROUP told the public that the gun ban is in effect.

“During this period, the transport of firearms and deadly weapons—including replicas and toy guns—is strictly prohibited,” the agency said.

AVSEGROUP director Brig. Gen. Christopher Abecia urged the public to check their baggage for prohibited items before travelling to avoid being inconvenienced.
