OVER P300 million worth of illegal drugs seized in previous anti-drug operations were burned in Zamboanga del Sur last Wednesday, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency said.
Zamboanga del Sur Rep. Divina Grace Yu led the destruction of the illegal drugs at the Libertad Power and Energy Corporation in Aurora.
Burned were 48.68 kilos of shabu worth P331.02 million and 1,041 pieces of expired medicines. Thirty-seven kilos of the burned shabu were seized in two separate operations in Zamboanga City last year.
The incineration of the shabu was witnessed by PDEA officials, including PDEA Zamboanga Peninsula regional director Maharani Gadaoni-Tosoc, and representatives from other law enforcement agencies, judiciary, local government units, and other stakeholders.
PDEA said the destruction of the drugs was ordered by the courts in Pagadian and Zamboanga cities, and towns of Molave and Aurora, all in Zamboanga del Sur.
“This is a testament to our unwavering commitment to eliminating illegal drugs and ensuring these confiscated substances will never reach the streets again,” said Gadaoni-Tosoc.
It was the largest amount of illegal drugs destructed in the region, PDEA said.
“With this record-breaking destruction, PDEA RO9 continues to strengthen its anti-drug campaign, assuring the public of its dedication to a drug-free community,” PDEA Zamboanga Peninsula said in a statement.
