OVER 700 motorists sustained injuries due to road traffic incidents during the holiday rush, according to the Department of Health.

In its latest report, the DOH said 703 cases of road traffic incidents were recorded in eight sentinel sites from December 22, 2024 to January 6, 2025.

In the past 24 hours, 47 road traffic incidents were recorded by the health department.

Of those injured, 603 did not have safety gear and accessories.

A total of 497 injuries also involved motorcycles, said the DOH.

There were 127 injuries involving drunk individuals.

Among the injured individuals, the DOH said there were a total of eight deaths, five of them involving motorcycles.

“Despite our repeated reminders, the number of motorcycle accidents remains high,” said the DOH.

The number of road traffic incidents reported was sourced from the eight pilot sentinel sites of the DOH.

According to Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, the high number of road traffic incidents during the holiday season underscores the need for stricter enforcement of road safety laws.

“Promoting road safety remains a critical priority of the DOH,” said Herbosa in a previous press briefing.
