PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. has named retired police Maj. Gen. Isagani Nerez the new chief of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said yesterday.

Nerez, who replaced former PDEA chief Moro Virgilio Lazo, previously served as an undersecretary of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Police Matters.

He took his oath in Malacanang yesterday.

Nerez is a lawyer and member of the Philippine Military Academy Maharlika Class of 1984.

He had also served in various capacities in the PNP, including the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response (PACER), Anti-Kidnapping Group, Special Action Force, and Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Eastern Mindanao.

He also served in the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force, as chief of the Baguio City Police Office, and later as chief superintendent of the Cordillera Police Regional Office.

PDEA spokesman Laurafel “Lawin” Gabales said Lazo resigned.

Gabales, however, could not immediately say when Lazo tendered his resignation.

“I don’t know when he submitted his paper. Beforehand, DG (director general) Lazo filed his resignation and it was accepted,” said Gabales.

“What I know is that DG Lazo resigned. Definitely, it was accepted. That’s why a new (PDEA director general) was appointed,” said Gabales, without explaining why Lazo resigned.

Gabales said he has yet to talk with Nerez, who bowed out of the police service in 2016 upon reaching the retirement age of 56. – With Victor Reyes
