Nearly 16,000 displaced by rains due to shear line: DSWD

OVER 4,000 families or close to 16,000 people have been displaced amid continuing rains and thunderstorms caused by the shear line, resulting in flash floods in parts of Mimaropa, Bicol and the Visayas, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) data showed.

Information from the DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Management, Information, and Communication (DROMIC) Division showed that as of yesterday, 43,319 families or 156, 796 people are affected in 293 barangays in regions IV-B (Mimaropa), V (Bicol) and VIII (Eastern Visayas).

It added that 4,049 families or 15,596 people were displaced, mostly from low-lying areas and near rivers and lakes. They include 3,357 families or 12,892 persons currently taking temporary shelter in 102 evacuation centers and 692 families or 2,704 people temporarily staying with their relatives or friends.

DSWD said the incessant rains and floods have resulted in five houses being damaged and a landslide in Legazpi City.

Assistance worth P8.4 million has been provided to the affected families, including P5.05 million from the DSWD, P2.4 million from the local government units (LGUs), and P908,900 from private partners.

A shear line is a weather phenomenon that occurs when warm and cool air masses meet. It could cause heavy rainfall and floods.
