More typhoid cases in Metro this year

MORE individuals in Metro Manila have been afflicted with typhoid from January 1 to November 9 compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The DOH – Metro Manila Center for Health Development (MMCHD) said it recorded 361 cases, or “23.37 percent higher” compared to last year’s 278 cases.”

It said that Quezon City had the highest number of typhoid cases with 62 (17.17%).

The DOH-MMCHD also said majority of the cases involved male patients, at 199 (55.12%) while the age group of below 4 years saw the most cases at 56 (15.51%).

Typhoid fever is a disease caused by the salmonella typhi bacteria, which can spread through contaminated food or water, or contact with an infected person.

On cholera, the DOH-MMCHD said “there is no relative change compared to same period last year.”

Records show that there have been nine cases of cholera recorded from January 1 to November 9.

Six of the cases were from Manila with.

The DOH-MMCHD said five of the cases were males and four from the 0-4 and 5-9 years age groups.

Cholera is a disease caused by the vibrio cholerae bacteria, which is spread by consuming food or water contaminated with human waste.
