MORE than 100 vehicles were apprehended and towed by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority personnel last Saturday as part of ongoing efforts to clear roadways of traffic obstructions as the Christmas season nears.
MMDA chief Romando Artes said the operation was carried out by personnel from their Special Operations Group-Strike Force.
“We are continuing our clearing operations on major thoroughfares, Mabuhay lanes, and other areas where complaints are received to ensure that these areas are obstruction-free,” Artes said.
In last Saturday’s operation, MMDA personnel targeted the areas of Doña Carmen, Commonwealth Ave., Scout Borromeo, Scout Esguerra, 11th Jamboree, Judge Jimenez, Aurora Blvd., Tomas Morato in Quezon City; F. Manalo St. and N. Domingo in San Juan City; and P. Cruz and E. Pantaleon in Mandaluyong City.
“In this operation, 96 vehicles were issued citation tickets while 36 others were towed to the MMDA impounding site in Tumana, Marikina City,” Artes said.
Owners of illegally parked vehicles are fined P1,000 fine for attended illegally parked vehicles and nd P2,000 for unattended illegally parked vehicles.
As part of the agency’s preparations for the holiday season, a temporary moratorium on excavation activities has been implemented starting November 18 up to December 25.
Included in the moratorium on road excavations are road reblocking works, pipe-laying, road upgrading and other excavation works that may hinder or disrupt the flow of traffic.
Exempted from the moratorium are flagship projects of the government, DPWH bridge repair and construction, flood interceptor catchment projects, and emergency leak repair.
In the same period, shopping malls in the metropolis will open from 11 a.m., an hour later than the usual 10 a.m., in light of the expected heavier traffic flow in the metropolis.
