ELEVEN days after it was closed due to a spitting incident, a church in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, was reopened by the Archdiocese of Ozamis.
Late on Saturday, the Archdiocese of Ozamis led the Rite of Reopening and Reconsecration of the Parish of Saint John the Baptist, where an individual spat at the holy water font.
“With hearts full of faith, the parishioners of the Parish of Saint John the Baptist of Jimenez gathered in thanksgiving as our beloved parish church was reopened and reconsecrated,” said the parish in a social media post.
“Truly, a day of healing, renewal, and hope for the community of Jimenez,” it added.
Ozamis Archbishop Martin Jumoad presided over the rites along with other archdiocesan priests.
“Their presence and prayers stand as a powerful testimony of a community united in hope, healing, and renewal,” said the Parish of Saint John the Baptist.
Last August 5, Jumoad ordered the closure of the church after an individual spat at the holy water font, which is considered a sacred object blessed and set apart for the sanctification of the faithful.
Under Canon Law, sacred places and objects are to be treated with reverence and respect, and acts violating their sanctity are gravely sinful and undermine the reverence due to sacred signs.
