PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s official visit to the United States next week for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has been cancelled, Malacanang said yesterday.

Communications Secretary Dave Gomez and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, however, were both mum on the reason for the cancellation.

“Confirmed. Cancelled na (Confirmed. It’s cancelled),” Gomez said while Castro said in a message to the media: “Confirmed di na po tuloy sa UNGA (Confirmed, UNGA will not push through).”

Gomez added that the President has delegated his engagements at the UNGA to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs “to allow him to focus on local issues.”

The visit would have coincided with the mass protest against corruption in connection with the suspected anomalous flood control projects in the country.

Marcos has already made five trips to the US since becoming President, with the last one made last July.

He first visited the US in September 2022 and addressed the UN.
