Drawing strength and inspiration from Filipinos in the stands, Eala rallied from 1-5 deficit in the third set to stun world No. 14 Danish player Clara Tauson 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 (13-11), becoming the first Filipino player to win a Grand Slam main-draw match in the Open era.
The President, in a social media post, said Eala enjoys the support of Filipinos and the whole country in every competition.
“She’s only getting started! Congratulations, Alex! Kasama mo ang buong Pilipinas sa bawat laban mo. Sama-sama naming isisigaw sa mundo ang galing ng Pilipino! (She’s only getting started! Congratulations, Alex! The whole country is behind you in every fight. Together, we will shout to the world the greatness of Filipinos!),” Marcos’ post read.
