ELECTIONS chairman George Garcia yesterday said that instead of signing the measure, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will just let the bill setting the new terms of barangay and youth officials and resetting the December 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to lapse into law.

Garcia said the President will no longer sign the measure on August 12, as he earlier disclosed.

“We have received information that it appears that there will be no more formal signing ceremony. The bill will just lapse into law by August 14 so the postponement of BSKE will automatically become a law by then,” he said.

“If there is a signing, that’s okay. If it lapses into law, there’s no problem also,” he added.

Garcia said the Comelec will continue with its preparations for the December 1 BSKE even if the measure lapses into because “someone will definitely question it before the Supreme Court.”

Elections lawyer Romulo Macalintal has earlier vowed to question the postponement of the BSKE before the SC as soon as it becomes a law.
