PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. yesterday extended the Philippines’ sympathies and solidarity with the United States amid floods that hit Texas on July 4 and have so far killed at least 119 persons.

Texas officials reported 170 still unaccounted for as of Tuesday night, suggesting the death toll could rise significantly.

Marcos, in a statement, said, “On behalf of the Filipino people, I extend our deepest sympathies to President Trump and the American people as they face the devastating floods in Texas… We stand with the United States in prayer and solidarity during this difficult time.”

“The Philippines knows the challenges of rebuilding after disaster and grieves with the families who have lost loved ones,” he also said.

“We have faith that the strength and resilience of the people of Texas, together with President Trump’s leadership, will guide them as they recover,” he added.

Most of the deaths were in Kerr County with 95 fatalities including 26 children.

The Kerr County seat, Kerrville, was devastated when torrential rains lashed the area early on Friday last week, dropping more than a foot of rain in less than an hour and swelling the Guadalupe River to a height of nearly 30 feet (9 meters).

The 95 fatalities in Kerr County includes at least 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer retreat on the banks of the Guadalupe. – With Reuters
